It is easy to go from Hanoi to Mai Chau by bus. You can catch a bus to Mai Chau from My Dinh bus station (Nam Tu Liem District) or Yen Nghia bus station (Ha Dong District).

At My Dinh, Hien Vinh, Duy Hung, Hoang Thao, Hien Vinh, Tuan Dung, Binh An are some reliable local buslines from My Dinh bus station to Mai Chau. Buses en route Hanoi – Hoa Binh run every 30 minutes from 5:00 AM to 7.45 PM. Expect the price to be from VND 45,000 to 100,000 (USD $1.98 – $4.4) with Duy Hung and Binh An providing the cheapest tickets and Hai Van providing the most expensive tickets. The total traveling time is 2 hours and 50 minutes.

There is also a 4-hour direct bus, but their departure times from Hanoi (6 AM and 2 PM) are not really ideal. As it is not difficult to get from Hoa Binh to Mai Chau, catching a direct bus is not a good idea.

From Yen Nghia Bus Station, buses en route Hanoi – Hoa Binh run every 30 minutes from 5:10 AM to 8.00 PM. Some reliable local buslines are Hoang Thao, Ha Loan, Tuan Dung, Duc Hieu, Yen Thuy. Expect the price to be from VND 50,000 -100,000 (USD $2.2 – $4.4) and the traveling time to be about 3 hours. It is a 75km motor-taxi ride from Hoa Binh to Mai Chau and a 2-3km walk from Mai Chau town to the villages.

Route 1: Nguyen Trai Street (Ha Dong District) – Quang Trung – Ba La – Chuc Son – Xuan Mai – Luong Son- Ky Son –Hoa Binh – Cao Phong – Tan Lac- Thung Khe Pass. After getting out of Thung Khe Pass, you will go along Route 15 for 6km to reach Mai Chau.

Route 2: Thang Long Avenue – Hoa Lac – Xuan Mai – Route 6 – Mai Chau.

If you want something more adventurous and have a chance to immerse in the impressive landscape of great mountains, surrounding paddy fields and limestone karst scenery, the green colors of jungles and the fresh atmosphere, it is wise to choose Bai Lang Route instead of Route 6. There are so many sudden bends, so look out and protect yourself. Even though you will have to endure dusty, dangerous and sometimes lethal highways, the incredibly breathtaking views along the way are well worth your try.
